About The Study

Chronic pain and early cognitive decline commonly happen at the same time and make each other worse. They can make physical, emotional, and cognitive health worse and raise the risk for dementia. Older Black adults have the highest rates of chronic pain and early cognitive decline, and are at the highest risk for negative health results due to these concerns.

  • Two programs that show promise for helping chronic pain and early cognitive decline with Black older adults are: (1) Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy plus walking (MBCT+w) and (2) Active Living Every Day (ALED).

  • Over 5 years, 400 older Black adults with chronic pain and early cognitive decline will sign up to participate in either MBCT+w or ALED.

  • Both programs will be delivered in-person in a group, community-based setting.

  • Each program lasts 12 weeks (about 3 months).

  • Our study was designed with our community partners, including Black older adults who could benefit from the programs to make sure that this study is customized for an older Black adult audience.
